Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi are paired with a Four Diamonds family, the Weinhold family, and we welcome them as a part of our Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi family. Noelle, the oldest of the three Weinhold girls recently turned 13 years old, and is officially a cancer survivor as of September 2018! Noelle was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms Tumor (a kind of kidney cancer) when she was 4 years old. She went through radiation, chemotherapy, and surgeries, including a total nephrectomy. Noelle battled hard and kicked cancers butt, never losing her smile or sass! Noelle is in 8th grade this year, and loves playing sports and dancing, especially with Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi . She dreams of becoming a veterinarian!

Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi love spending time with the Weinholds: we have been there in celebration and support for their ups and downs, as they have been for Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi . Our members have gone to the Hershey Medical Center with Noelle to celebrate her 4 and 5 year cancer free scans. We have created a “Family Celebration” tradition with them, which is a condensed version of THON weekend, including four hours of no sitting, the THON line dance, a pep rally, a fashion show, and family hour. We have attended the girls’ soccer and basketball games, we’ve gone laser tagging, and we had a tailgate together before the THON football game in November 2018.

In October 2018, Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi learned that Noelle’s battle buddy, Kirra, had relapsed with leukemia for the fourth time and that her doctors were out of options. So, Volé and Alpha Sigma Phi went to Hershey to visit Kirra and shower her and her family in gifts and love. In early December, we learned that Kirra passed away, so some of our members offered their condolences at Kirra’s funeral, and comforted Noelle as she dealt with the loss of a good friend. In September 2019, Noelle testified in front of the Senate Finance Committee to fight for more pediatric cancer funding so that one day, no other 10 year olds will have to go through this experience. Many of our members are inspired by both Kirra’s and Noelle’s strength, and will never forget all that we have learned from them.
